Delhi’s sprinter Tushar Kanti Manna and Haryana’s javelin thrower Jyoti were cynosure of all eyes as they entered their names in the record books on the penultimate day of the fourth edition of Indian Open U23 Athletics Competition here at Patliputra Sports Complex on Sunday.

While the Delhi sprinter broke the 46 seconds barrier to win gold in 400m, Jyoti improves her own javelin throw record.

Manna shifted gear in the homestretch to post a winning time of 45.92 seconds in the men’s 400m, which was better than the meet record of 46.58 seconds set in 2021 by Ayush Dabas.

At the javelin throwing arena the defending champion from Haryana was unstoppable. In-form Jyoti surged ahead of other competitors on her opening throw but got a big throw on her fifth attempt (58.49m), which was better than her own previous record of 52.77m set in 2023.

She had a series of 54.92m, 55.83m, 57.41m, 54.27m, 58.49m and 55.40m.

Jyoti’s teammate Deepika also bettered the previous meet record. Her silver-medal winning throw was 54.71m.

On his way to winning gold Haryana’s Abhimanyu equaled men’s discus throw meet record of 53.66m set last year by Dinesh Kumar in Chandigarh.

Two women high jumpers— Gobika K of Tamil Nadu and Payal of Gujarat equaled the meet record of 1.76m. Gobika won the gold, while Payal settled for silver.

Ankita, who competed in women’s 5,000m at the Paris Olympic Games made her debut at the 3,000m steeplechase event. She won gold with a time of 10:17.25 seconds.

Odisha’s Animesh Kujur and Sudeshna Hanmant Shivankar of Maharashtra emerged fastest male and female athletes of the meet. Kujur clocked 10.40 seconds, while Sudeshna winning time was 11.76 seconds

3,000m steeplechase: Suraj Pal (Uttar Pradesh) 9:00.52 seconds, Parveen Kumar (Haryana) 9:11.11 seconds, Vishnu Kumar (Rajasthan) 9:13.97 seconds.

Discus throw: Abhimanyu (Haryana) 53.66m (equal the meet record), Shubhkarman Singh (Punjab) 52.34m, Nagendra Annappa (Karnataka) 51.98m.

20km race walk: Sachin Bohra (Uttarakhand) 1:28:51.58 seconds, K Pilot Singh (Manipur) 1:28:51.94 seconds, Deepak Gurjar (Rajasthan) 1:33:26.43 seconds.

Decathlon: Jashbir Nayak (Odisha) 7065 points, Logesh Kumaar AS (Tamil Nadu) 6525 points, Rathod Lokesh (Karnataka) 6440 points.

Women

100m: Sudeshna Hanmant Shivankar (Maharashtra) 11.76 seconds, Tamanna (Haryana) 11.88 seconds, Angel Silvia M (Tamil Nadu) 11.98 seconds.

3,000m steeplechase: Ankita (Uttarakhand) 10:17.25 seconds, Vandana Mori (Gujarat) 10:28.13 seconds, Sonam (Delhi) 10:30.29 seconds.

Javelin throw: Jyoti (Haryana) 58.49m (improved her own meet record of 52.77m set in 2023), Deepika (Haryana) 54.71m, Shakshi Sharma (Uttar Pradesh) 45.27m.

High jump: Gobika K (Tamil Nadu) 1.76m (equal meet record), Payal (Gujarat) 1.76m, Pallavi Patil (Karnataka) 1.72m
